HOW DID I GET HERE?

The story behind Stitchcraft Gifts

Back in 2019, I had been a full-time mum for three years.

I was (and still am!) hopelessly in love with my son and for the most part, enjoying life – I spent my days playing with building blocks and playdough, watching cBeebies and going to the park.

But I had begun to realise that I didn’t really feel like “me” any more. All my energy was going into motherhood, and none of it back into myself. Something had to change.

A good friend of mine had been crocheting (among other things) for a while already and I really liked what she was making. So, I decided to give it a go! I bought a cheap hook and some affordable acrylic yarn, looked up some tutorials on YouTube and got stuck in.

If I’m honest, It took me a while to find the rhythm. My first few attempts just didn’t work – I kept losing stitches and couldn’t work out why – and I very nearly gave up! But then my friend suggested trying a different technique, and it all just clicked. Very soon I had made a whole blanket (a pretty wonky granny square in a riot of mismatched colours, which my son still uses occasionally!) and was on the lookout for new projects.

I can’t remember what I made next, but I know it didn’t take long before I was making anything and everything I could think of, signing up to crochet subscriptions that I couldn’t afford, and beginning to collect piles of yarn. Soon after that, I started thinking about how amazing it would be if I could use this newfound skill to help support my little family, and exploring the best ways to sell online.

I’ve changed things up a lot since then. I have an online shop, a YouTube channel, a Ko-fi page and, of course, this website!

But the mindset behind this venture hasn’t changed at all. I want to bring in an income to help support my family  - to pay for holidays, birthday presents, after-school clubs, you name it! I love creating beautiful things and sharing them with others, and it’s seriously thrilling that I can make money while doing that.

So, now that my son is at school (at time of writing he is nearly eight – how time flies!!) I spend my days playing with yarn, watching tutorials and going to craft stores

I create things that I think are pretty and pop them online in the hope that someone else will too. If you do, you can find readymade pieces in my online shop or get in touch to commission something completely unique to you.

Whichever you choose, you can be sure that you’ll receive something crafted with care, and that you’ll be making me happy in the process.

Take care,

Jeni
